Everywhere I turn, the name Colleen Hoover leaps out at me. In bookstores, her books are front and center and her titles are endless. There are even entire sections dedicated to her. Coupled with her powerful online presence, Hoover fans simply cannot get enough of her. Naturally, I had to see what all the hype was about and I purchased my first Colleen Hoover novel It Ends With Us recently. Being the book enthusiast that I am, I was actually embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of her before or read any of her books.
My First Taste of Hoover
The story pulls you into the electric romance and irresistible chemistry that pulsates between Lily and Ryle. You cannot help but get wrapped up in their love story. It’s the story that we all want. Attractive, sweet girl meets hot, wealthy bachelor and, despite his aversion to love, he cannot help but fall for her. What makes the story even better is, parallel to the present day storyline, we also get to experience, through Lily’s diary pages, her teenage romance with her first love Atlas. Hoover gives us everything we need to keep turning the pages for more.
A Story of Depth
As you are busy falling in love with the characters and their idyllic lives, the story takes a sudden and dark turn that catches you completely off guard. Albeit, in hindsight, Hoover did plant a red flag or two. The author explores very serious issues that she is able to draw on from personal experience and it adds depth to the story that I was not expecting. It Ends With Us sends a powerful message about survival, maternal love and even mental health.
Colleen Hoover gave me what I was looking for and so much more. Get your tissues ready when you pick up this one. You will need it! I am currently reading the sequel, book two, It Starts With Us and will be sure to give you my thoughts on that one as well!
